OUR STORY
The journey is the only thing that stayswith you.
I started as a photographer and travelled to destinations like Spiti, Sangla Valley and Ladakh. During these sojourns, collecting stones in the form of stories fascinated me.I was amazed by their form and unique beauty. After many such chance encounters, one day the stones told me that their time had come. I married these stones to metal and thus began my unconventional collection. In search of further inspiration, I went around Mumbai's junkyards and sourced brass & copper scraps. I discovered that these scraps had beautiful structures & shapes. They were unconventional, undefined and distinct. They too wanted their story to be told. I took a conscious decision to use them the way they are as I believe reusing is a better form of recycling. I feel these scraps were like sleeping beauties who had finally woken up and now were waiting for the world to discover their true potential.
Often you can’t force things to happen. When they have to come together, they will. It’s like an happy accident. Which is why, I have never tried to have set designs for my pieces. I have let the objects talk to me and then given them the shape they sought. The process of design creation has usually been organic. This is what keeps me excited towards my work. It's the joy of discovering how two unrelated objects can form unpredictable patterns, yet not look disjointed. Just like two random individuals, who come together to form an unspoken bond for a specific moment in time.
For Lakme Reincarnations - Fashion's Second Life, I thought of using brass and copper scrap. In search of them, I went around Mumbai’s junkyards and was met with questioning eyes. They wondered why I was taking such an interest in what was considered as waste. However, unseen to them, I discovered that the scraps often had beautiful structures and shapes. Just that they were not the typical circles and squares. They were unconventional, undefined and distinct. The usual process is to melt them but that means doing away with their original form. Also, I believe reusing is better form of recycling. So, I started collecting and happy accidents kept happening. The scrap materials began to find their own identity and I found my eight unique designs. You could say that the scraps were like sleeping beauties who had finally woken up. And now, it’s time for the world to see their true potential.
